The more I think about the ongoing collapse of Hollywood’s cinematic fortunes, the more convinced I become that the main problem is that the people who are responsible for making movies… writers, directors, producers and executives… are completely out of touch with who their audiences are and what their audiences want.
Definitely one of George’s best. He nails it right here:
“Nowadays it seems like the prevailing wisdom in Hollywood is that if an audience walks out of the theater smiling, then it means they didn’t learn their lesson.”
T blog used to love going to the movies on the weekend, but is not going to pay $18 for a progressive lecture.
Just read green lights, autobio by Matthew McConaughey hey Hollywood celebrity who seems to have his head screwed on right.
If you want romance, stop looking to Hwood and start watching Korean films and series. They still believe in heterosexual romance and love, and do a great job delivering it.
Surprisingly, some nice series featuring smart, independent women have been coming from China. The business people aren't depicted as greedy exploiters (hard to do if the woman is involved in a romance with the CEO), but rather as hard working and dedicated to their work.
Interesting.... I wonder if China has learned a lesson that America seems to have forgotten, that muscular pro-domestic entertainment culture is the greatest soft power weapon known to man? Also, I really liked RRR... it reminded me of the fun buddy cop movies Hollywood used to make back in the 80s... thematically very similar to TANGO & CASH
Yeah and I'm glad they are, but I sure would love to see Hollywood get back to the days when they used to know how to make great romantic fantasies. Nothing wrong with Hallmark movies, of course, but you're not likely to see something like WORKING GIRL there...
Secret of My Success is one of my all time favorite popcorn films. I’ve watched it dozens of times and it’s always great fun. The scene where Brantley is being chased by the mailroom boss never fails to get a big laugh from me, and the music is just excellent (particularly “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves.
I’ve been thinking about rewatching this recently and was pleasantly surprised to see this article via Instapundit. Thank you for helping me reminisce about better times.

"Oh Yeah" by Yello. Need I say more?
You do not 🤣
And music by David Foster, also other exemplary ‘80s movies.

Nice commentary. But (this bugs me) the apostrophe represents the missing “19” should come first. The ‘80s.
I’ll edit… thanks for the note… and the kind words
It didn't hurt that 80's Michael J. Fox was peak charisma.
No it sure didn't.... he had John Ritter's gift for physical comedy but was more charming and better looking, with more star quality
Hollywood doesn’t make them… but Hallmark does (or did until recently)…. And now GAC (Candace Cameron Bure’s channel) is taking up the baton…

I didn’t realize that Night Ranger did the title track and that Roger Daltrey contributed a song as well… but yes, great soundtrack!
